Year One and Year Two

Hello and Welcome to the Year One and Year Two Page!

Hello and welcome to the Year One and Year Two Class Page.  Mrs Armstrong will be teaching in this class this year and Lynsey will also be working with us. We are really looking forward to working with the children and supporting their progress as we go through the school year. We have some wonderful topic and learning experiences planned to ignite, enthuse and stimulate the children's learning.

As ever, if you have any questions or issues you need to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me either via the School Office, through email or by phone.

We look forward to working with you this coming year.

Mrs Armstrong and Lynsey

Week beginning Monday 29th November

This week has been all about collaborative learning in Year 1 and Year 2. We are coming to the end of our topic on Superheroes and having been creating story mountains together to retell the story of Eliot Jones-Midnight Superhero. We also have created our own superheroes and are getting ready to write stories about them next week. As part of our Hanukkah celebrations we made our own Menorahs while learning about how Hanukkah is celebrated. Finally the children did a fantastic job of decorating the class Christmas tree-great teamwork all round!

Week beginning Monday 15th November 2021

This week we have been celebrating Anti-Bullying Week. We started the week by wearing odd socks to school to celebrate individuality. We talked about how important it was to recognise bullying and what to do about it. The children worked together to think of positive words to describe friendship - we used the theme of ‘One Kind Word’ to focus our learning. Finally we celebrated Children in Need day by coming to school in non uniform and donating £1 each for Children in Need.

Week beginning Monday 8th November

This week we have been learning about the life and work of Florence Nightingale as part of our ‘I Need a Hero’ topic. We have been comparing hospitals of the past to those of today and have talked about how Florence Nightingale changed nursing for the better.
In maths we have been investigating fact families and the year 2 children have been looking at how we can make different sums with the same numbers. In science we have started to learn about our senses and what each of our 5 senses do. We will be undertaking some practical investigations on these in the coming weeks!
As part of our Remembrance Day activities we made a poppy wreath out of our handprints and talked about why we have Remembrance Day each year.

Week beginning Monday 1st November 2021

We have been incredibly busy on our first week back after half term. In maths we have been looking at addition and revising the part-whole model from before half term. We have read the story of Rama and Sita as part of our Diwali celebrations. On Thursday as part of our Diwali day, the children designed Mehndi patterns and created Rangoli patterns on the playground. As it is Bonfire Night as well this week, we have been learning about how to be safe during Bonfire Night celebrations and have made some super firework pictures.

Week beginning Monday 3rd October 2021

Another busy week for our Year 1 and Year 2 children on the run up to half term. We have started reading ‘Little Red’ this week which is a twist on the tale of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The ending is particularly popular with the children! Next week we will be writing character descriptions about the wolf using our adjectives we have thought of today. In Maths we are continuing to look at representing numbers in different ways and using a part/whole model to partition numbers into tens and ones.
We enjoyed a second trip to St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday where we took all the items donated by the children for the foodbank. We also took part in a Harvest assembly.

Our self portraits are almost finished and we look forward to sharing them with you next week! As well as painting ourselves, we have also been recreating our portraits on laptops through Purple Mash.

Week Beginning Monday 27th September

We have had an incredibly busy week in Year 1/2 this week. On Monday we travelled to Newstead Abbey to learn about about what it was like to be a child in Victorian times. We wore a school uniform and attended a class (where we had to pay 1p!). In the classes we had wooden desks with slates to write on. When Mr Miller came into the class we all had to stand up until he told us to sit down. We also had a guided tour of the top of Newstead Abbey where the Webb family used to live many years ago. We looked in the children's bedroom and saw lots of their toys - they are so different to the toys we enjoy playing with today. The children behaved impeccably and we had a fantastic time.

In the classroom this week we have been looking at counting in steps from a wide range of numbers. The Year 2 children have been investigating place value and how we can partition a 2 digit number into tens and ones.

Our Science topic is all about our bodies - this week we have been learning about our vital organs such as our heart, lungs and brain and what their function is.

We are also very busy learning our Harvest song ready for our visit to St. Mary's Church next Wednesday (the link is above).
