Teaching of History

At Westwood Infant School History is planned to stimulate curiosity, interest and awareness of the past and how it is different from the present. We aim to enable children to ask insightful questions, establish a sense of chronology and develop a sense of identity and where they belong in time.

In the Early Years, History is taught through 'Understanding the World' from the Development matters. Children are given opportunities to make sense of their own life story, their family history and to compare past to present, through group time and enhanced provision.

In Key Stage One, History is taught weekly following the National Curriculum through a topic based approach.  Children will learn about the history of their local environment, community and the wider world.

Explorers Club

As part of our History curriculum at Westwood, we have created an Explorers club! This will focus on the past and our wider world. We share this with Geography. For our History focus we have explored Greek Gods and Goddesses, what castles are really for and the time of the dinosaurs!

Remembrance Day 2022

On Monday 7th November, Westwood welcomed a visitor into school that brought artefacts from the second World War. We discussed how some of the items were used and what for, including a plastic "computer" used in aircrafts! We learned about how some of the items were not items that could be used again, because they had been altered. We now know an event that took place in the past, and why Remembrance Day is so important.

Trips

Our children went to Newstead Abbey in the Autumn term for a Victorian experience.
