Reception 2023 - 2024

Welcome to Westwood School Oak class!

Oak class is Westwood's Reception classroom. I am so excited to start the year with you all! We are going to go take part in a fantastic learning journey together, and we'll do it as a team. This half term we will be focusing on the topic "How Things Grow" and we will be exploring everything outside! We're looking forward to our caterpillars arriving in March, and growing our own food from seeds.

Children will swap their Library Lodge books on a Thursday. Please enjoy these stories with your children and write in their reading diaries. Children have also now been given sound cards that link to our Phonics scheme that they can begin to blend. Please continue to write in their communication booklets. If children wish to complete other things at home and are proud of their accomplishments, please share these with me!

If you have any questions or queries, please either contact the school office, or speak to me on the gate during drop off or pick up times.

I'm looking forward to a fantastic year with Oak class at Westwood!

What's inside a pumpkin?

Reception explored the inside of pumpkins. We had to made a prediction about what was inside. We thought:

  • It would be orange inside
  • It would be slimy
  • Some of us thought it would be hard
  • Some of us thought it would be soft
  • We would find seeds

We found out that some of these things were true, but not all pumpkins are orange on the inside! We also explored which parts were soft and which were hard. Some of us then chose to try to plant some pumpkin seeds!

Grandparent's afternoon!

As part of our aim to include our families with more of our learning, we invited our Grandparents to a crafting afternoon. We shared stories, made special artwork and spoke about their times in school. We had a lovely time and hope to invite them back soon!
