Hello and welcome to the Year One and Year Two Class Page
Mrs Gilham will be teaching in this class this year and Miss Goacher and Miss Foster will also be working with us. We are really looking forward to working with the children and supporting their progress as we go through the school year. We have some wonderful topic and learning experiences planned.
This half term we will be focusing on the topic "In the Garden". We will be learning all about plants and how they grow. We will be working on sentence writing and improving our writing with adjectives, including diary writing and poetry. Our stories for the half term are 'The Gigantic Turnip' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. There are links below to both of them if you wish to listen to them with your children. We'll also be developing our skills in Maths by learning about length, height, weight and volume, as well as working on our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Children have taken home a Library Lodge story book to read please return this on the following Friday so we can change this for a new one. If you do have any other books from the library at home please do send them back to school. Please try to read these stories with your children and write in their reading diaries every evening is possible to win raffle tickets for the prize draw every Friday. Reading books will be sent out as the children progress in their Phonics skills.
If you have any questions or queries, please either contact the school office, or speak to me on the gate during drop off or pick up times.
We look forward to working with you this coming year.

The Gigantic Turnip
This hilarious retelling of the classic Russian tale about a farmer whose turnip is impossible to pull from the ground uses simple vocabulary and is ideal for reading aloud. Its cumulative theme will soon have young readers gleefully joining in, and Irish artist Niamh Sharkey's wonderfully quirky illustrations will delight and fascinate all ages.
Jack and the Beanstalk by Richard walker & Niamh sharkey
Climb the beanstalk with Jack in this quirky take on the traditional tale. When there's no food in the cupboard, Jack goes to market to sell Daisy the cow. But rather than money, Jack procures magic beans...and the promise of adventure!
Our class bear!
Our class bear, Huggles would love to spend the weekend with you! If your child receives 'Star of the Week' they will be able to bring Huggles home. Please use the book provided to document the fun things they have done for us to share with the rest of the class.
Pizza Express trip
We had a brilliant time on our trip to Pizza Express! Every child made their own margherita pizza and we particularly enjoyed eating them after!
Music!
We have enjoyed learning about different musical instruments and the four families- woodwind, percussion, strings and brass. We all had a go with a variety of instruments and discussed the different sounds.
Harvest Festival
As well as our annual visit to church to celebrate Harvest Festival, we enjoyed taking part in lots of crafts and made some fantastic Harvest crowns and baskets!
Science- The human body and senses
In Science we have been learning about the human body including body part names and our senses. We did a fun experiment to test and explore our sense of touch and smell!
PE- Ball Skills
In PE we have been improving our ball skills. This has included throwing, catching and kicking skills, working on technique and coordination.
The Great Fire of London!
Display work- Some children made a fantastic house from The Great Fire of London!
Writing instructions!
In our English lessons we have been learning about how to write instructions and the features that we must include. All children wrote their own instructions for "How to make a jam sandwich" and then followed them to successfully make their own.
The children really enjoyed this and especially enjoyed eating them afterwards!
Our Sponsored Walk
Our sponsored walk was a huge success! As a school we raise over £1000 for the charity Angel Small Paws. We are very proud of the children for walking every day and allowing us to make this fantastic donation to a wonderful charity. Well done Westwood!
Remembrance Day
Westwood worked together to create a beautiful wreath of poppies to lay at the memorial where we took part in a two minute silence to show our respects. We also attended church where we took part in a Remembrance day service.
Christingle!
We attended our annual Christingle service at church where we each made a Christingle and learned about what each part represents. We then invited our parents to watch us stand in church with our lit Christingles to sing some hymns.
Christmas crafts and decorating
We had lots of fun over Christmas making lots of crafts and decorating the classroom! We even invited parents in for a 'Victorian Christmas' craft afternoon which was enjoyed by all. We have made lovely Christmas cards and tree decorations to take home as well as making the classroom look very festive!
Our Christmas Nativity
"A Miracle in Town" - What a fantastic show we put on! All of the children learnt lines and had lots of rehearsals to put on a great show for our parents, families and friends. Well done to all of the children involved!
Art
We love Art in year 1 and 2! We have been looking at famous artists and recreating some of their artwork which has been lots of fun. We learnt about Piet Mondrian who created block collages in primary colours and Mark Rothko who painted colour field paintings by mixing primary colours to make new colours.
Geography
In Geography we have been learning all about continents. Ask your child to sing the continents song to you!
Chinese New Year
We loved celebrating Chinese New Year! We made snakes as it is the year of the snake and took part in a variety of crafts. We also tasted some traditional Chinese food, even having a try with chopsticks!
Design and Technology
After reading "A Planet Full of Plastic" and learning about plastic pollution, we took part in a project in our Design and Technology lessons. We discussed how reusing can be good for the environment and decided to design our own reusable shopping bags. We drew the design first and then replicated it onto our bags. Don't they look fantastic! And we are helping the environment at the same time by reducing our use of plastic shopping bags.
Mathletics Superstars!
Valentines Day Craft Afternoon
Our parents joined us for a fun Valentines craft session. We had lots of fun creating Valentines cards and hanging hearts with, of course, extra glitter!
Nature Art!
After learning all about Andy Goldsworthy and his nature sculptures in our Art lessons, we decided to go on a nature walk and find some natural resources to create our own nature collages.
Pancake Day
We loved celebrating Pancake Day! We had delicious pancakes and put on whichever toppings we liked ourselves. After pancakes we had a go at pancake tossing (substituting the pancake for a beanbag!) and even had some races! It was lots of fun.
Planting Tomato Seeds
After learning all about plants in Science and writing instructions for planting a tomato seed in English, we all planted our very own tomato plants. We will water them every day and hopefully have a healthy tomato plant to take home at the end of term!
Easter Crafts at St Mary's Church
Making bird feeders
We made bird feeders using recycled materials, peanut butter and bird seed and hung them on our trees in the playground. The birds (and squirrels!) loved them.
Exploring volume and capacity in Maths.
Jacksdale Garden Centre.
We had a lovely visit to Jacksdale Garden Centre. We were treated to some delicious cakes and a drink of juice before being shown around the garden centre and finding out all about some of the plants and flowers there. We particularly loved smelling the different
herbs!
