Teaching of History

At Westwood Infant School History is planned to stimulate curiosity, interest and awareness of the past and how it is different from the present. We aim to enable children to ask insightful questions, establish a sense of chronology and develop a sense of identity and where they belong in time.

In the Early Years, History is taught through 'Understanding the World' from the Development matters. Children are given opportunities to make sense of their own life story, their family history and to compare past to present, through group time and enhanced provision.

Key Stage 1 take part in more structured lessons at different parts of the year to develop an awareness of Chronology, Significant People and Events. They also have access to roleplay areas to cement their learning.

At Westwood we approach History through enquiry based learning, where we take a big question and answer it by the end of our unit of learning. This is not a simple yes/no question and allows us to really dig deep into our topics!
