Teaching of Religious Education

Religious Education (RE) is a subject taught throughout school that aims to develop children’s understanding of the world in which they live. Through RE teaching, children will learn about different religions, traditions, practices and beliefs. RE also promotes children’s tolerance and mutual respect in a diverse society.

RE is taught directly each Wednesday afternoon for up to an hour in Reception and Key Stage One. Children in EYFS have access to multi cultural resources to enhance their provision.

Staff follow the Nottinghamshire County Council Religious Education Syllabus in which children engage in whole class and small group activities.

Trips and visits to places of worship, including our local church, enhance children’s experiences and promote curiosity.

Right to Withdraw from Religious Education

All parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education.

If you would like to withdraw your child please speak to a member of staff.

If you do withdraw your child please note the following -

  • If pupils are withdrawn from RE, schools have a duty to supervise them, though not to provide additional teaching.  A pupil may be required to work in another area of the school, such as the nursery.
  • Whilst parents or carers have a right to withdraw children from RE, they should note that children may also encounter religions and beliefs and wider aspects of faith in other areas of the curriculum from which there is no right of withdrawal.
  • On occasion, spontaneous questions about religious matters are raised by pupils or issues related to religion arise in other curriculum subjects such as history or citizenship (PSHE)  For example, schools promote community cohesion and help pupils to understand ideas about identity and diversity, feelings and emotions within both religious and non-religious contexts.

St Mary’s Church

Through our religious education teaching we endeavour to build strong community links and work closely with St Mary’s church in Jacksdale.

Our God is a Great Big God

One of the songs we sing when we visit St Mary's Church. We also sing this each week in Miss Woodcock's assembly.

**Please note: We do not own this song or the lyrics**
